When you go to a PPT to discuss the IEP with PPS members it can be overwhelming to keep up with all of the acronyms and terms.

Accommodation: A change of teaching techniques, environment or materials.

Annual Review: The meeting to take place each year to review progress and discuss the plan moving forward.

BIP: Behavior intervention plan

Co-Taught: A classroom that is a mix of special education and general education students that is taught by both a general education teacher and special education teacher in tandem.

DIBELS: A reading assessment given to all students (varies by school).

Due Process: The legal process that you can formally use if you disagree with the school.

ELA: English Language Arts

Evaluation: A standardized assessment conducted to gain information in different areas such as cognitive, academic, speech and language, fine motor, gross motor, social/emotional and behavioral.

FAPE: Free Appropriate Public Education

FBA: Functional Behavioral Analysis

IDEA: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

IEE: Independent Educational Evaluation

IEP: Individualized Education Plan

LRE: Least Restrictive Environment

Manifestation Determination: A meeting to determine if a change of placement is necessary because the child has violated a school code.

Modification: A change in the expectation of the child to learn.

Review and Revise: A meeting that takes place in between annual reviews to review or revise the IEP.

SBAC: A statewide assessment to measure your child’s progress towards common core state standards in ELA and Math.

Self Contained: A classroom that consists of only special education students.

PLOP: Present Levels of Performance

PPS: Pupil Personnel Service

PPT: Planning Placement Team

Prior Written Notice (PWN): A formal letter the school sends to the parents or guardians that documents changes.

Progress Report: A document that marks the progress your child has been making with each marking period.
